All those who know me or have been following Mummy Wishes will know that I am a huge fan of learning through play and will always choose an educational toy over, for example, Nerf guns. And yes, he keeps looking at them on Youtube or when we’re out and about, but he knows I’m not allowing anymore as we have every style of gun at home. So I prefer toys which have multiple uses or an educational purpose, like the GeoSafari Jr. My First Microscope from Learning Resources.
When I received the package from Learning Resources, I couldn’t wait to show and explore with my curious 4 year old JasperBean.
The GeoSafari Jr. My First Microscope is beautifully made, sturdy and bright. The design was spot on for a preschooler. It’s colourful and super easy top use. With a traditional wheel to lift and lower the barrel to increase/decrease magnification, JasperBean was able to open the package and start playing with it immediately without any instructions.
We like the fact that there is a light which makes the magnification alot clearer. The microscope has been dropped numerous times, but the light still works perfectly.
The description was that the microscope can obtain x8 magnification, but we only achieved probably x2 magnification. This was rather disappointing.
However, even though it doent magnify enough for our 4 year old, he still enjoys using it to take a closer look at many objects we have scavenged for around the house and in the garden and parks. By using the microscope rather than a magnifying glass, he is able to concentrate more on what he is looking at. It also frees up both his hands so that he can play around with the items before putting them under the microscope for examination.
Final thoughts of the My First Microscope
A great starting point to introduce and nurture an interest in science. As a first learning tool, it offers a beginners experience into microscopy and allows little ones to focus on the many details in the world without distractions. We definitely recommend the My First Microscope for budding scientists that has shown an interest in details. Hopefully, this little first microscope will lead JasperBean onto more advanced ones too.
Learning Resources has a huge range of high quality educational toys and you should definitely check them out. What other educational toys do you recommend for curious little ones? Check out some other educational toys I recommend.
Thanks for reading and until next time…
