Travel Outfit Essentials and Ideas

We are off on our next adventure and I would like to share with you my travel outfit essentials and hopefully it can inspire you on your next trip too. I, like everyone else, want to feel comfortable, yet stylish when travelling. But I’m no Jessica Alba or Rihanna, so I wouldn’t dare think about wearing pyjamas at the airport! No way! Travelling to me is fun and I want to make sure my outfit reflects that before the plane takes off! So, I want to look practical, sane and presentable especially if I’m going to be cramped in a tiny seat with a hundred other souls and a possibly moody toddler.

My Travel Outfit Essentials

Essentially there are 4 (maybe 5) things you need to consider when putting together a travel outfit. If you follow these, then your travels will be a walk in the park! Ok, maybe not, but at least you don’t have to worry about your comfort level or temperature fluctuations. You just need to make sure you’re on time, at the right terminal and not losing any of your belongings. Including your children. If you have any. So, here we go…

My Travel Outfit Essentials

1. Layering

I am big on layering and airport style is what it is all about! If you’re like me and flicker from hot to cold at a flip of a switch, then layering is a must. Who can withstand the blast of cold air in flight only to be given a toilet paper thin blanket? Or if your flight is delayed and you have to wait on the tarmac for a good hour or two with nothing but excessive emission of bodily heat and stale air? You get the point…

As a mummy, layering is also great for slobs and messy fingers too. Remember, you don’t need a full outfit change. Adding or removing a layer of fabric works wonders to cover grubby bits that may have accidently made their way onto your once pristine outfit…

I also ALWAYS pack a scarf with me wherever I go, whether it be a thick woolly one or a light cashmere scarf. It will always come in handy. I have even used them as a makeshift baby sling in the pass. True multi-purpose and multi-tasking at its best! If you want to find out how I do this in a future post, please comment below! 🙂

I am currently loving this “Minnie’s Travels” Hoodie from Uniqlo! It really puts me in a happy travelling mood even though it’s not a very baby friendly colour, it’s extremely cosy. If the weather can get a bit nippy or unpredictable, like the U.K. then it’s always wise to bring a jacket/coat too. It sounds like a lot, but all this layering just means fewer clothing items to stuff in your luggage! Win-win.

2. Skin Tight

Clothing should never be skin tight if you’re going to be sitting for long hours… Firstly, you’re going to be super uncomfortable, your crotch is goint to hate you and no item of clothing is worth risking deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Yikes… steer well clear!

For a long haul flight, you should really wear loose fitting clothes made from natural materials such as cotton, they are soft, comfortable and breathable. But if you really can’t bear to part with your skinnies. Opt for ones that have spandex, at least they give a bit, like these light and breathable Airism Leggings I’m wearing from Uniqlo. I do love a bit of Uniqlo! They are perfect for travelling/exercising and fold down to literally nothing, so you can pack an extra few pairs too. There is also a hidden pocket inside the rear waistband, great for carrying coins or cards for last minute cheeky purchases in the departure lounge. 😛

3. Colours and Patterns

Floral is everywhere and not just reserved for Spring, hippies or parks. They are also great when paired with a dark pair of boring leggings. You can really dress them up with a floral, pattern or colourful top. As a mummy, this definitely works for me. Remember the grubby hands? Florals/patterns/colours will hide a multitude of sins (food, dribbles, spills…) before you arrive at your destination and have time to refresh. The perfect colour and/or pattern can also add a hint of colour to your skintone and shave/hide some of the weight you may have put on during your holiday.

Also try to choose tops that are loose and don’t crease or wrinkle too easily like my New Look Ditsy Floral Print Shirt.

4. Comfy Shoes

Although most people take their shoes off the minute their bottom touches their seat. It is always wise to wear flat, comfy shoes, and preferably slip ons too. This will make going through security and the miles and miles of airport teminals a breeze. I have chosen to wear my trusty ‘ol Classic White All Star Converse and replaced the tie up laces with Hickies No-tie shoelaces. No more faffing about with laces or tripping over them whilst chasing #JasperBean.

5. One Accessory (Optional)

I’m talking about the jewellery, the hat and/or the celebrity must have – Sunglasses! A signature accessory will make you feel like your outfit is complete. If you opt for jewellery, keep this to a minimal, you don’t want to be the one holding up the queue at security or lose anything precious. Personally, I would take a pair of sunglasses as they make me feel so much better especially when I haven’t managed to sleep well on the plane. We can be like celebrities entering arrivals with awaiting paparazzi’s ready to blind us with their camera’s! Right?! Right! We can always dream. 🙂

I also always have…

  • Socks. Especially if I’m wearing pumps. I refuse to walk around barefoot around the cabin and even though I have slip ons, taking them on and off can be a bit of a pain. Most importantly I like to keep my toes warm and preferably intact!
  • Hairband. Static and flyaways. These are definitely not pretty, so I usually tie my hair in a top knot so that I don’t scare my neighbours mid-flight.

So to conclude, travel outfits are essentially another off duty look. Striking the balance between comfort and style is the key and I hope you agree and like my outfit too. What are your travel outfit looks and essentials? I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for reading and until next time…

Love, MsMamaBean x

Great outfit. I always wear layers when traveling as I get cold really easy but when your struggling with luggage and toddlers it’s easy to get hot and sweaty so something like a hoody that can be tied round the waist is essential for me. Pulling the hood up always makes me feel cosier when I’m trying to have a nap mid flight too x

I always make sure I have a sweater/hoodie instead of a jacket because I hate the bulk in the small seats!

You definitely look comfy in your outfit. I like that you can take out the pink sweater (which i love), and you look a bit more polished! 🙂

I haven’t began to travel just yet, but layering is definitely one thing I need to do. I’m always super cold even when people are burning up. Lol
