Nursery Christmas Concert Gone Wrong

When was the first time your little one was cast in a Christmas Concert? How did it go? Do you think back on it fondly? Or hope it had never happened?

We recently attended #JasperBean’s Christmas Concert and like the previous year, we (me and S) were very excited! We practised Jingle Bells and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star until we could sing no more. I even brought materials to make his outfit instead of buying the bog standard supermarket Christmas outfits. Our little star was promoted from a sheep last year to a star this year! We basically couldn’t wait for our little one to sing his heart out, but again, we should have known, that it wouldn’t go according to plan.

So, what do I think went wrong?

  1. They are far too young. #JasperBean’s group was between the ages of 1-3 years old and keeping this age group in control was impossible.
  2. Not all kids enjoy nursery, so if this was their day off. Suddenly being told they’re going to nursery is probably not going to go down too well.
  3. There were far too many adults in the room. There was at least a 2 to 3 adult to 1 child ratio. If I was that little kid in the front, with a room full of strange big people staring at me. I would be petrifield.
  4. The room was far too small for the amount of people it was holding. It was crowded, hot and basically if you came on time, you couldnt get a seat or see anything at the front.
  5. Parents/carers were not given any instructions. So they did whatever they wanted. That being said, I’ll be fair and say they just wanted to get a glimpse of their child and take that perfect photo. However, that probably scared the kids even more! One child starts screaming and they all decide to join in like a choir.
  6. And when their child screams, all hell breaks out. No rule sticks anymore and they would climb over anyone to get to their child to make sure they’re ok.

far too crowded hall

Still, It’s ok! And Thank You!

None of these are the child’s fault and I really felt so sorry for the nursery carers/workers there. They were hot/flustered and running out of ways to deal with screaming children and hot and agitated parents/carers. This was a recipe for disaster but every year they are optimistic and try to put on a good show. Hats off to them for trying. So the best way to deal with this was to speed through the program and get everyone out! This is by no means a moany post, but a thank you to nursery’s up and down the country who try so hard to put on brave faces for us at this busy time of year. Although it didn’t go according to plan, we thank you for all your effort. You are very brave indeed!

We also enjoyed making the outfit :), practicise singing songs of praise and learning more about Jesus.

Measuring out star outfit
#JasperBean was all too happy to help me measure the start of his little star outfit.
Decorating the DIY star with gold yarn
After cutting out the star shape, I covered it in a yellow cotton fabric and then decorated it with gold yarn.

Measuring the backstraps
Trying out the star and measuring the position of the backstraps.

So next year, if there is another Christmas concert or Nativity show, regardless of how good or bad it will be. We will be there. Just like any other milestones, we’ll be there supporting our little one, whether he’s crying or smiling.

crying star, still shining bright for the concert
After almost crying through the entire performance, a photo with my little blurry eyed star. You’ll always be a bright shining star in mummy’s eyes.

Thanks for reading and until next time…

Love, MsMamaBean x

I can’t wait until my LO is old enough for concerts! It’ll go horribly wrong with my daughter but it’ll be fun regardless

Awww…I’m sure it was so wonderful to watch! I’m a teacher and a mom so I know how hard it is on any given day to organize such events. Kids will be kids. It’s all about the thought and intention. They’ll be many more.

Yes! I really appreciate how much thought and effort was put in by the teachers and kids. Even though it wasn’t as planned, we still enjoyed it and would go again and again!

Awww, what a sweatheart and trouper for even making it through, to him, a scary experience. Hopefully next year will be a much better experience for all involved. You’re a great mom for supporting him and making him the shinning star that he is. Loved the costume and your post – Thanks for sharing!

What a lovely comment! Thank you Ana! Fingers crossed next year will be a bit better, I’m not expecting much, just a smile will do. 😊 if not, we’ll try, try and try again! Thanks for visiting and come back soon! X

I remember my kids in school shows and the memories are totally priceless even if things don’t go the way they’re supposed to. We were always there to support them and now and when we watch the videos, we can’t help but love them even more! 😉

I agree! Experiences whether good or bad are memories that cannot be recreated again. I’m sure there are many unique memorable experiences you’ve had with your boy too!
