My favourite children’s prayers

Please do not read the title of this post and ignore! Even if you’re not a Christian, practising praying actually has many benefits and as a parent children’s prayers can also give you a little insight into your child’s mind.

Why pray?

One of #JasperBean’s favourite book is the Baby Bible: Stories about Jesus and I try and reinforce the idea that praying is a way we talk to God and get His direction for our lives. Even if we can’t see him, He is always there to listen to us and we can prayer anytime of the day. You’re probably think that he might be too young to fully understand the concept of God, but as we prayer together during mealtimes, bedtime and when we feel happy, frustrated and scared. I can really see that there is something tinkering away in his little head. It may take some time for him to acknowledge that there is no prayer too small for God but for now, I am happy that we are partaking in this activity together as a family.

I find the following prayers great to go through with my child as they harbour a greater meaning to life. These are not my prayers, they were either shared from the internet or from friends/family and you definitely do not have to follow it word by word, adapt and change them up to however it fits you and your family’s day. I enjoy adding these to my daily prayer routine and feel that they add value to building our relationship with God and making pray habitual. They are short and easy to understand, so I hope you can utilise them as well and share with your friends/family.

Tips for teaching your child to pray:

    • Keep prayers short and simple.
    • Its never too early to start praying. They don’t need to be able to speak. They can listen, imitate what you do or repeat what you say. Laying a good foundation is what you’re aiming for.
    • Start by incorporating prayers into your normal daily routines, such as mealtimes and bedtime.
  • But don’t make praying a chore that is only set at particular times. This should be spontaneous and fun for your child.
  • Set an example. When your child sees you praying, they will see how easy it is to talk to God through prayer.
  • Teach different types of prayers. Thanks, healing, forgiveness, praying for others etc.
    • “Dear God, Thank you for…”
    • “Dear God, Please bless…”
    • “Dear God, Please help me…”
  • Tell your child how much God loves them and how much He loves to hear their prayer.

Do you pray with your child? Please share any tips you have in the comment section below. If you’re an Atheist, have you ever tried praying? If not, give it a shot. You have nothing to lose and I guarantee that even if you think nothing has changed, you will definitely feel better.

Thanks for reading and until next time…

Love and Amen, MsMamaBean x

This is a beautiful post! My dad always taught me to pray whenever I am thankful, worrisome, or when in need!

I love praying! I’m glad that you are teaching your child to talk to God! These prayers are good, did you write them up yourself?

I didn’t teach my children any set prayers to memorize… but prayer is a big part of our lives… having been raised catholic, and being told as a child pretty much God only listened to me if I spoke w a priest, I have been determined to raise my children to have their own personal relationship with The Lord and they should feel free to pray and speak to him when their heart is inspired…

Both my teens were raised attending church regularly with us, although praying at home as a family was not something we ever did. Whilst they are both baptised they are yet to be confirmed as they have expressed a wish to wait and explore religion themselves rather than being taken down a set path, collecting markers along the way. My eldest believes but does not wish to be confirmed and has very strong views on worship, my youngest on the other hand enjoys going to church and does want to be confirmed and be welcomed into a community. I think it is sad nowadays that faith is disappearing and the younger generation is not taking such an active interest, it is not easy but as parents we have a role to fulfil in introducing our children to all aspects of life so that they can make informed decisions for the future. It is wonderful that you are introducing your son to God so early. It is clearly a big part of your life and therefore should be shared. An interesting read. #familyfun

Thanks for commenting Jo, this is really a lovely message to read from you. I think it’s great that we as parents give our children the option to choose whether they would like to be confirmed or not and explore religion in their own way and time. Like you say, it is our role as parents to introduce all aspects of life to them and I’m happy that my son has shown an interest, but if in the future he chooses not to, then it is his own decision to make. Personally, we don’t pray in our house but you’re right I suspect there are benefits for everyone in terms of praying, Christian or not. It is also like you say a nice thing to do as a family and something he will remember as part of his youth and treasure. Thanks for joining us at #familyfun

I pray with my children at bedtime – they enjoy saying thank you for the things that they have enjoyed that day. I love this list of prayers for children – some of them I remember from my own childhood 🙂 #familyfunlinky

How cute! My parents always prayed with my sister and I before bed and we loved it.

We have just started being intentional about praying with our son. He is one and I think he likes the added ritual to bed time routine.
