Whiter Teeth? Try Mr Blanc’s Bamboo Charcoal Whitening Polish

*This post was written before the tragic events in Manchester on 22 May 2017. I am deeply saddened by the events and my thoughts are with the family and friends of all of those affected.*

Beauty trends come and go, but the thirst for whiter teeth has made this a billion £ market driven by our celebrity culture. Googling reveals thousands of teeth whitening products that you can buy, DIY at home or seek professionals for. They are everywhere and one ingredient that I come across, again and again, is charcoal. Recently there has been an outburst of celebrities on social media posing with a black toothpaste and pearly whites! “What is this thing they are holding and what does it do?” After looking into it a bit more, I found out that it’s a teeth whitening product call “Mr Blanc Teeth Bamboo Charcoal Whitening Polish” and it’s available at Boots and on Amazon!

Charcoal Whitening polish
Being a mum, I can no longer justify sitting in front of a mirror spending 30+ minutes putting on makeup and doing my hair (unless I really have to). Time is of the essence and frighteningly short. Therefore spending so much time putting on my face and then letting grubby little hands wipe all over them just didn’t appeal to me. BUT brushing my teeth, well I do that every day! So I decided to research a bit more…

Charcoal Whitening Polish: Ingredients

  • Sorbitol: Sweetening agent
  • Aqua: H2O
  • Calcium Carbonate and Silica: both are abrasive substances used to remove stains and debris, they are odourless and tasteless and when combined together are used to remove plaque safely.
  • Glycerin: prevents the toothpaste from drying up and also prevents bacteria from growing.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: foaming and wetting agent allowing the paste to spread more easily
  • Aroma: flavouring???
  • Charcoal Powder: Activated charcoal is extremely effective at binding with toxins and removing stains
  • Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate: foaming and cleansing agent
  • Xanthan gum: thickener
  • Sodium Saccharin: Another sweetener
  • Sodium Benzoate: prevents the growth of bacteria, mold, and other microorganisms
  • Menthol: giving it its minty taste

It doesn’t specify the quantity of each ingredient, and most of them are actually widely used in regular toothpaste, so is it just the Charcoal powder that gives it its magical whitening results?

Description from their Website:

MrBlancTeeth Bamboo Charcoal Whitening Polish targets teeth staining tannins found in a variety of different foods such as coffee, tea and wine. Low in abrasion, the Activated Charcoal helps remove tannins from the surface of the teeth without harming the enamel, resulting in whiter teeth. MrBlancTeeth Bamboo Charcoal Whitening Polish keeps your enamel strong and healthy and leaves you with a long-lasting feeling of cleanliness and freshness.”

The product states it targets staining tannins such as tea, coffee and wine. I hardly drink any of those, so I don’t really know what results to expect, but I do eat a lot of sweets and I’m especially fond of my alcoholic gummy bears at the moment! So I had to give this product a try and this is how I got on:

After 1 week:

I think my teeth are slightly whiter but I don’t know if this is because I’ve been brushing my teeth longer each time as I’ve used both the charcoal toothpaste and my regular one to finish it off.

After 1 month:

before and after whitening
Please don’t judge my poor wonky imperfect teeth, I’ve only put it up for you to see the before and after! And I must say they definitely appear whiter than before. This is especially visible on the bottom central incisors. I have read some reviews that claimed it made some people’s gums more sensitive, but I never experienced this at all. So would I continue to use it? Looking at the photos above, yes! However, I may also experiment with using activated charcoal powder/capsules directly from the health store and see whether I get the same results as well. Why? Because firstly, it won’t contain ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Sodium Saccharin, Silica etc and secondly, it would work out much cheaper.

Would you give this product a go? You may not get whiter teeth overnight, but if you persist, there’s really no harm in trying for a month to see if brushing alone can get them a shade or two whiter, right? Please let me know if there are other products or techniques that you would recommend?

Until next time…

Love, MsMamaBean x

do those ingredients hurt your gums in any sort of way? My gums are sensitive (stupid genetics) and I don’t want to aggravate them any more than I have to. Though it would be a fun Halloween project to walk around with black goop in my mouth

Putting black stuff all over your teeth seems counterintuitive, but it does seem to help whiten your teeth. I’m not sure I’d use something like that regularly though. I usually stick to teeth whitening toothpaste or mouth wash because it’s less time consuming for me. 🙂

I agree! I wouldn’t use it in the long term, but as a prep for a future event, maybe I would incorporate it into my routine for a short time. Good mouth hygiene like flossing and using mouth wash would be a better option 😊

I loved reading this. It gave some new insights. Keep sharing useful content! 🙂

Wow! This product seems that it really works. I am glad that it works for you. I may use something like that if I had a fancy outing I had to go to such as my friend’s wedding or something. Otherwise, I would just floss, and brush my teeth.

I’ve heard of this before, a lot of people say it’s good. I will try out and see the results myself.

    24 May 2017 at 9:59 pm

I hope you will be able to get some good results with it! I have heard that some people haven’t seen a difference, but really no harm to try and see. 😊

Wow! did you notice any sensitivity with your teeth after using the charcoal stuff?

I have never used a charcoal toothpaste but I have put a little a charcoal on my toothbrush and it has helped with whitening my teeth and not feel scared about using a lightener.

25 May 2017 at 1:15 pm

Oh wow, I’d be too scared to use charcoal, even though it whitens it makes your teeth black first and I’d worry I wouldn’t get it all off or something, haha! Glad that it works for you though 🙂

Hope you are having a great week! I just published my first eBook so I’m having a pretty good week! 🙂

I’ve never heard of charcoal toothpaste before but your teeth do look whiter ! I use to use the Crest whitestrips but like once ever month or two as they use to cause serious sensitivity.

I’ll look into this brand 🙂
Thank you !!

I have heard that that works! Looks like a good product.

25 May 2017 at 9:35 pm

I have a few friends who have the problem of yellow teeth. I will definitely recommend this to them. Thanks for sharing!

25 May 2017 at 10:20 pm

Oh it does look disgusting but it obviously works. Would this affect any fillings or veneers though? Thank you for linking up to #ablogginggoodtime 🎉

    25 May 2017 at 11:23 pm

Some people have reported that their crowns/veneers haven’t been affected after using activated charcoal on their teeth, but I would check with your dentist to confirm, especially since they cost so much to get done.

26 May 2017 at 2:46 am

I’ve actually been thinking about trying out charcoal products to see how they work on my teeth. It seems like this product actually works! I’ll have to look into it 🙂

26 May 2017 at 6:49 pm

I really need to whiten my teeth – I tried more traditional whitening and it killed! Did you get any pain sensation with this at all? Interested to hear more and thanks for linking up to #coolmumclub xoxo

I actually bought a teeth whitening kit years ago but never ended up using it because it contained a teeth mold and bleach. Scarey! But this sounds like something I’d try… #TriedTested

29 May 2017 at 1:26 am

I drink way too much coffee on a daily basis, do you think this would affect the results of using this product? There is a ton of products that all have a claim to give you white teeth. Some of these products contain bleach I’m told. At that point I think we have just gone too far!

    29 May 2017 at 1:31 pm

Definitely wouldn’t want to put bleach in my body, let alone in my mouth! If you’re drinking a lot of coffee, I guess using this polish as part of your cleaning routine would help, even if it doesn’t make it whiter, hopefully it won’t allow your teeth to stain any further

29 May 2017 at 2:39 am

What a difference! I love using charcoal for teeth whitening!

29 May 2017 at 5:14 am

I’ve tried brushing my teeth with charcoal before but didn’t keep it up! I’ve been wanting whiter teeth lately, maybe I’ll try this out 😀 Thanks for sharing!

I laughed at the photo of the black teeth but honestly, I think you’re teeth are really nice! Not wonky at all. And the polish did a great job, I’ll have to check it out!
